Florida City Gas, a subsidiary of Southern Company, has partnered with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to offer a 1,220 hours Natural Gas Operation & Distribution training program. This program is designed to prepare students for an entry-level natural gas general technician position. The General Technicians are responsible for the maintenance of the pipeline system and customer service related functions, including deactivation of services, delayed match, corrosion inspections, and meter reading. Additionally, the General Technicians function as members of a crew – engaged in installing, maintaining, repairing gas mains and service lines.
The General Technicians are also responsible for operating heavy equipment, using hand tools, basic leak investigation, assisting in mechanical joining, landscape maintenance, traffic control, and Encoder Receiver Transmitter (ERT) programming in conjunction with Automated Meter Reading (AMR) duties.
